Best Gmail Apps for Mac in 2026
Gmail in the browser is fine until it is not. The best Mac Gmail apps in 2026, from Mimestream and Superhuman to local-first Vithos.

Gmail in Safari or Chrome works until you have three accounts, a flaky network, and a day that is nothing but threads. A Mac Gmail app is worth it when search, shortcuts, and offline use beat the tab.
This list is Gmail-shaped. Outlook-first tools are in the broader Mac roundup.
Why leave the tab
The tab is the source of truth. A good client does not replace Gmail; it makes Gmail feel like a Mac app:
- One window for every account. How to run that.
- Keys for archive, next, remind. Palette thinking.
- Search that does not spin. Local index.
- Offline archive and draft when the plane mode switch is on.
If you only check mail twice a day, stay in the tab. The apps below are for people who live there.
The Gmail shortlist
| App | Why it exists | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail in browser | Zero install, full Google | Chrome, weak offline |
| Mimestream | Native Mac Gmail now | Gmail only |
| Vithos | Local-first, Linear UX | Waitlist, Apple Silicon |
| Superhuman | Speed as a service | Price, closed platform |
| Spark | Phone + Mac + teams | Cloud features |
| Shortwave | AI-first Gmail | Seat cost |
| Apple Mail + Gmail | Free, system app | Not Gmail-native |
| Canary Mail | Privacy extras | Tier complexity |
Gmail itself
mail.google.com plus search operators and keyboard shortcuts. Multiple accounts work if you tolerate Google’s account switcher. This is the control group.
Mimestream
Mimestream is the buy-today native answer. Gmail labels, categories, and send-as map cleanly. No IMAP roadmap required, because IMAP is not the product.
Vithos
Vithos indexes mail on the Mac. Search, archive, and compose keep working offline; sync catches up. ⌘K, unified inbox, Waiting On, quiet AI, Vithy with approval on writes. Pro $14.99/month or $149.99/year, 7-day trial. macOS 14+, Apple Silicon, Gmail / Google Workspace. Waitlist. Privacy writeup: local-first email and the Privacy Policy.
Superhuman
Superhuman if you want the coaching culture and will pay for it. Compare features and price on Vithos vs Superhuman.
Spark, Shortwave, Apple Mail, Canary
- Spark: best when the phone matters as much as the Mac.
- Shortwave: AI as the product, Gmail as the store.
- Apple Mail: free, good enough, not a Gmail specialist.
- Canary Mail: if encryption features are why you left the tab.
What to verify
Before you grant Gmail access:
- Limited Use. Google’s user data policy is the floor. Revoke anytime at Google account permissions.
- Where the body goes. Local-first versus “we process mail in our cloud to write summaries.”
- Account cap. Two personal + one work is the usual real-world setup.
- Exit. Mail stays in Gmail. If the app dies — Notion Mail just did — you are not trapped.
Vithos is the local-first line in that list. If you want it, join the waitlist. If you need an app this afternoon, Mimestream or the tab.
