A Gmail Command Palette Beats Another Toolbar
How a command palette turns Gmail into a keyboard instrument: archive, remind, switch accounts, and search without leaving home row.

Toolbars do not scale. Gmail has too many verbs. A command palette treats the inbox like an editor: you type what you want, the client does it, focus never leaves the list.
Why the palette wins
Icons you use weekly rot into mystery meat. Icons you use hourly should already be keys. The palette sits between those: discoverable, searchable, complete.
This is how Linear and Superhuman taught a generation of tools. Email is a better fit than most SaaS because the verb list is finite: archive, reply, remind, snooze, label, schedule, jump to account.
Keyboard-first clients without a palette still fail the “I forgot the chord” case. A palette is the manual that runs.
The actions that matter
A Gmail palette that is not embarrassing includes:
- Archive / trash / mark unread
- Compose and reply
- Search mail
- Jump: Inbox, Sent, Drafts, a label
- Remind / Waiting On / snooze
- Switch account
- Open shortcuts

If your client’s palette can search messages but cannot run actions, it is Spotlight glued to an inbox, not a command menu.
Gmail in the browser
Gmail keyboard shortcuts are real once you enable them. There is no first-class command palette. / is not a product-wide launcher. You will still mouse for the awkward verbs.
That is acceptable for light use. It is why people pay Superhuman, or wait for a native app.
A native palette
On a Mac, the palette can be instant because the action list and the mail index are local. Type “hopper” and you should see both the thread and “search mail: hopper”. Type “wait” and you should set a follow-up, not scroll Settings.

Until then: turn Gmail shortcuts on, learn e and j/k, and keep a text file of the filters you always retype. The palette is a better file.
