Local-First Email: Why Mail on Your Mac Still Matters

Local-first email keeps Gmail on your disk: offline archive, instant search, and no vendor reading the body. What it gives you, and what it does not.

Local-first email means the working copy of your mail lives on the machine in front of you. Gmail remains the server of record. The client syncs; it does not make you wait on someone else’s database to archive a thread.

That sounds obvious until you use a web client on a train.

What local-first means

• Read, write, search, archive with the radio off.
• A local index. Search as you type, not after a round-trip.
• Reconcile later. Conflicts are a sync problem, not a UI freeze.
• Vendor servers do not need the body to render the inbox.

Vithos stores mail in local storage on your Mac. FAQ and the Privacy Policy say the same thing: Vithos servers do not see message content. Analytics exclude it. Gmail access runs under Google’s Limited Use rules. Revoke from Google account permissions.

Offline is the test

Marketing copy loves “works offline.” The test is boring:

1. Turn the network off.
2. Open a thread you already synced.
3. Archive it. Star it. Search a word you know is in the body.
4. Write a reply. Do not send if you do not want to — queuing is enough.
5. Turn the network on. The changes should land in Gmail without a lecture.

If step 3 shows a spinner or an error, you have a cache, not a local-first client. Apple Mail and Thunderbird have passed this test for years. Many “AI email” apps have not.

Privacy without theater

Local-first is not e2e encryption of Gmail — Google already has the mail. It is a narrower promise: this vendor is not a second inbox copy in a region you did not pick.

That matters for:

• Quiet AI that can run against local data, or not run at all.
• Agents you bring yourself over MCP, with scoped keys, instead of a baked-in cloud model that trains on your tone.
• A shutdown. Notion Mail could delete Mail-only extras; it could not delete Gmail. A local client that dies still leaves the .sqlite and the Google account.

Honest limits

• First sync is a network event. Local-first starts after the mailbox is on disk.
• Push still needs a connection. New mail arrives when you are online. Vithos uses push, not a 15-minute poll, but physics still applies.
• Multi-device is “each device syncs with Gmail,” not a proprietary mesh. Fine for Gmail people. Bad if you wanted a private server.
• Vithos is Mac / Apple Silicon / Gmail today. Windows, IMAP, and Outlook are on the roadmap without dates.
• We do not publish latency lab numbers. Instant is the design; treat millisecond claims as goals until we measure in public.
