10 Best Email Clients for Mac in 2026
A Mac-first shortlist of email clients in 2026: Apple Mail, Mimestream, Spark, Superhuman, Vithos, and five more, with official links and real limits.

A Mac email client is a bet: native feel versus web chrome, local mail versus someone else’s servers, keyboard versus mouse. This is a 2026 shortlist, not a scoreboard. Official sites are linked. Vithos is on the list and is our product; it is also waitlist-only.
What matters on Mac
- Gmail quality. Most power users live in Google Workspace. A generic IMAP wrapper feels like a compromise.
- Keyboard coverage. Archive, next, palette. See keyboard-first clients.
- Search latency. Local index versus a round-trip. Why that matters.
- Trust. Does the vendor’s cloud read the body to power AI?
- Price. Confirm on the vendor page. Numbers here are orientation as of September 2026.
Windows-only tools stay off this list. So do dead products.
The ten
| Client | Best for | Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Mail | No extra app | Free |
| Mimestream | Native Gmail today | Paid, trial |
| Spark | Mac + iPhone + teams | Free tier |
| Superhuman | Keyboard speed, coaching | ~$30/mo |
| Vithos | Local-first Gmail, Linear UX | $14.99/mo, waitlist |
| Canary Mail | Privacy features | Free + paid |
| Microsoft Outlook | Microsoft 365 shops | M365 |
| Thunderbird | Free and local | Free |
| Missive | Shared inboxes | Per-seat |
| Shortwave | AI-first Gmail | Per-seat |
1. Apple Mail
Apple’s Mail User Guide is the baseline. Free, signed, already on the machine. Good enough for mixed accounts. Gmail works; it does not feel like Gmail. Start here if you resent subscriptions.
2. Mimestream
Mimestream is the default recommendation for “Gmail, on a Mac, this afternoon.” Native, fast, Gmail-fluent. No IMAP, no Windows. Check current monthly/yearly pricing on their site.
3. Spark
Spark wins when you also have an iPhone and maybe a team. Free tier is real; AI and collaboration sit behind paid plans. Cloud-assisted features are the trade.
4. Superhuman
Superhuman is still the cultural default for keyboard email. Expensive, excellent shortcuts, built-in AI. Closed: no public API. Full notes on Vithos vs Superhuman.
5. Vithos
Vithos is a native Mac client with a local index, ⌘K, unified inbox, Waiting On, and an MCP/API story. Pro is $14.99/month or $149.99/year with a 7-day trial. Apple Silicon, macOS 14+, Gmail and Google Workspace. Join the waitlist. Not a download today. Roadmap is public.
6. Canary Mail
Canary Mail for people who came for encryption and locked attachments more than for a palette. Free tier exists. Read the current grid before you commit; names change.
7. Microsoft Outlook
Outlook if your company is Microsoft 365. On Mac it is competent, not beloved. Wrong tool if you are a Gmail person shopping for speed.
8. Thunderbird
Thunderbird remains the free, local, no-vendor-AI answer. It will never look like Linear. That is the point for some people.
9. Missive
Missive is a shared inbox with comments. Solo Gmail users will pay for a team product they do not use. Support and agency teams will wonder why they used anything else.
10. Shortwave
Shortwave if the product you want is “Gmail, but an AI runs it.” Premium seats. Different thesis than local-first.
