Gmail is the default landing. Your mail is already there. Labels, search operators, and scheduled send work. If you only opened Notion Mail for a calmer skin, the tab is enough.
Skip it if you want offline-first search, a real command palette, or a Mac app that does not feel like a website.

3. Mimestream
Mimestream is the native Mac Gmail specialist. Fast, polite, Gmail features mapped cleanly. A good “I want an app today” answer. It is Gmail-only and does not try to be an agent platform.
4. Superhuman
Superhuman taught this category that people will pay for keyboard speed. If you already liked Notion Mail’s shortcuts and want a polished coach, it is the expensive default. Spark is the cross-device pick: Mac, iPhone, a useful free tier, team features when you need them. Confirm AI and collaboration limits on their pricing page. It is a stronger “family of devices” answer than a local-first Mac tool.
6. Apple Mail
Apple Mail is free and already installed. Gmail accounts work. Search and shortcuts are better than they used to be, worse than a client built only for Gmail. Fine if you do not want another subscription.
7. Canary Mail
Canary Mail leans on privacy and encryption, with a free tier and paid plans. Worth a look if end-to-end features matter more than a Linear-style palette. Read the current pricing grid; the tiers move.
8. Shortwave
Shortwave is Gmail with an AI-first product bet. If you wanted Notion’s agent story more than its inbox chrome, this is closer to that thesis than a local client. Seat prices are premium. Check the site.
9. Missive
Missive is for shared inboxes and internal comments, not for a single founder clearing mail. If Notion Mail was a personal Gmail skin, Missive is the wrong shape. If a team shared the inbox, it is the right one.
10. Thunderbird
Thunderbird is free, local, and open source. It will still be here in five years. It will not feel like Notion Mail. Use it if you want ownership more than polish.
