Keyboard-First Email Clients: Work Inbox Without the Mouse
What keyboard-first email actually means: a palette, chords, and no hunting. How Superhuman, Vithos, and a few others treat the keyboard as the product.

Keyboard-first is a claim every email app makes and almost none keep. A few shortcuts on compose does not count. The client is keyboard-first when you can clear a hundred threads without touching the trackpad, and when a missing action is a product bug.
The minimum bar
A serious keyboard client needs:
- Move. J/K or arrows. Next unread without a mouse hunt.
- Act. Archive, remind, snooze, label — one key, not a menu.
- Find.
/or a palette that searches mail and commands. - Discover. A cheatsheet (
?or⌘/) that lists the lot. - No dead ends. If Compose has a shortcut and “mark waiting” does not, you will reach for the mouse on the important action.
Gmail’s own shortcut list is a decent baseline. Native clients should beat it, not hide it.
Palette versus shortcuts
Shortcuts are for the ten verbs you do every minute. The command palette is for the rest: an action you do weekly should still be typeable.

Leaving Notion Mail? Its shortcuts were fine and mouse-leaning. Do not go backward to a client that makes archive a toolbar click.
How to audit yours
Spend one real inbox session. Count how often you touch the trackpad. Typical leaks:
- Opening the calendar from a thread.
- Setting a follow-up. Waiting On should be a key.
- Switching accounts. ⌘1–9 or it does not count.
- Search that needs a spinner. Local search.
If the count is high, the app is a window with keys painted on. If the count is near zero, you found a keyboard-first client. Vithos is aiming at the second pile; Superhuman already lives there.
